Split it into tens and ones
To add 34 + 25, add the tens (30 + 20 = 50), then the ones (4 + 5 = 9), then put them together: 59. This partitioning strategy is shown in the explanation after every Addition Forest question.
Crossing the ten
Sums like 38 + 25 create more than 9 ones (8 + 5 = 13). Those extra ten ones become one more ten. Canopy Challenge focuses on exactly these questions once children are ready.
